Si la question du rite occupe pour l’ethnologie une position fondatrice, sa représentation s’inscrit aussi dans le texte et l’image. Modulées selon plusieurs traditions, les pratiques rituelles (passages, cycles de vie, sports, activités quotidiennes, rites séculiers) infléchissent les productions narratives et visuelles contemporaines. Il s’agira dans cette séance de réfléchir sur la place du rite dans les pratiques littéraires, cinématographiques, médiatiques; d’articuler une homologie entre rite et narration; de définir les contours d’une archéologie du rite (historicité et mémoire culturelle) et de penser l’imaginaire culturel d’une œuvre à partir du rite. En posant l’idée de la coutume en tant que matière première, nous invitons les participants à se pencher sur le travail d’artistes qui modèlent — en construisant et/ou déconstruisant — les règles rituelles à la lumière d’un contexte de référence (présent ou passé), comme les rites eux-mêmes façonnent les sociétés. Cette malléabilité des schèmes culturels, en plus de révéler leur force symbolique, fait du rite un opérateur de narrativité qui structure la logique de l’œuvre. Partant d’une réflexion sur les procédés d’invention, de réappropriation ou de transformation qui organisent les mises en récit du rite, nous espérons mettre en évidence des effets de sens menant à l’interprétation d’un imaginaire culturel (et social) dans les œuvres, et voir, plus largement, l’évolution de la tradition au fil des siècles — dans sa perception et sa réactualisation.

If the question of the rite occupies for the ethnology a founding position, its representation also inscribes in the text and the image. Modulated according to several traditions, the ritual practices (passages, life cycles, sports, daily activities, secular rites) influence the contemporary narrative and visual productions. It will be a question in this session of thinking about the place of the rite in the literary, cinematographic and media practices; of highlighting a homology between rite and narration; of defining the contours of an archaeology of the rite (historicity and cultural memory) and of thinking the cultural imaginary of a work based on the rite. By putting forward the idea of the custom as a raw material, we invite the participants to look at the work of artists who model the ritual rules — by constructing or deconstructing them — in the light of a context of reference (present or past), as the rites themselves shape the societies. This malleability of the cultural schemes, besides revealing their symbolic force, makes of the rite a narrative operator which structures the logic of the work. On the basis of a reflection on the processes of invention, of reappropriation or transformation which organize the story-telling of the rite, we hope to emphasize the elements of sense leading to the interpretation of a cultural (and social) imaginary in works, and to see, more widely, the evolution of the tradition over the centuries - in its perception and its reactualization.
