Que la caricature et la satire graphique offrent des terrains fertiles pour la recherche sur les représentations visuelles et textuelles n’est sans doute plus à démontrer. L’intitulé de la thématique proposée regroupe les deux notions de parole et de graphisme, qui dénotent deux traditions qui ne se pensent plus l’une sans l’autre, sans pourtant fusionner, et qui témoignent des difficultés associées à la traduction. Notons tout d’abord dans la langue française l’habitude consistant à résumer sous la rubrique ‘caricature’ toute une série de démarches satiriques. Celle-ci est comparable à la tendance dans le monde anglophone d’utiliser l’expression ‘graphic satire’ comme terme englobant. Entre un premier vocable qui incarne un procédé visuel et un second qui propose la variante visuelle d’une forme rhétorique ancienne, s’ouvre donc un espace dans lequel pourraient être abordées les questions de la « langue dans laquelle on dessine ». Quelle est la réalité pragmatique des relations texte/image dans l’espace du dessin satirique, quelle incidence a-t-elle sur la démarche interprétative, quand la langue de conception et celle de la traduction forment les conditions de lisibilité du dessin? Quel effet l’opération caricaturale produit-elle sur la parole par ses représentations manipulatrices du corps (individuel, social) et plus particulièrement du visage? Comment, enfin, relier ces facteurs aux procédés et imageries qui peuvent différer (ou s’entremêler) en fonction des aires culturelles et linguistiques?

That caricature and graphic satire offer fertile ground for research on image and text has long been established. The title of this session groups the two notions of speech and graphics, reflecting two traditions that have to be thought with one another without necessarily being fused, and that attest to the difficulties associated with translation. It’s noteworthy that the French tradition has a habit of summarizing a whole range of satiric approaches under the rubric 'caricature’. By contrast, the English-speaking world has a tendency to use the term 'graphic satire' as a similarly all-encompassing term. Between one term that embodies the visual, and an alternative that provides the visual variant of an ancient rhetorical form, opens a space in which issues could be addressed to "the language in which we draw." What is the pragmatic reality of text/image relations in the space of the satirical, and what is impact of this reality on our interpretative approaches, when the language of conception and that of translation form the conditions of a drawing’s legibility? What effect does caricature have on speech through its manipulative representations of the body (individual, social) - especially of the face? Finally, how these factors relate to processes and imagery that may differ (or become enmeshed) according to cultural and linguistic areas?
